The Red Tulip Lanyard is a visual identification symbol created to promote inclusion, empathy, awareness and understanding regarding Parkinson’s Disease. The initiative was developed by the movement “Living with Parkinson’s”, in partnership with the movements “Parkinson’s Life is Overcoming”, “Facing Parkinson’s” and Studio Bolt.
Inspired by the red tulip — the international symbol of Parkinson’s Disease — the lanyard works as a discreet and respectful communication tool, allowing people with Parkinson’s to signal their condition whenever they wish, especially in situations of vulnerability or when support is needed.
Parkinson’s Disease presents motor and non-motor symptoms that may vary throughout the day. Often, these signs are not immediately understood by the public, leading to embarrassing situations, judgment or lack of proper assistance.The Red Tulip Lanyard emerges as an accessible and humanized identification solution, helping to:
Promote awareness about Parkinson’s Disease;
Facilitate priority and compassionate assistance;
Reduce situations of prejudice and misinformation;
Improve communication in public environments;
Encourage social inclusion and respect for invisible limitations.
Just as the sunflower lanyard became a worldwide reference for hidden disabilities, the Red Tulip Lanyard seeks to increase visibility for the needs of people living with Parkinson’s.
Using the lanyard can directly contribute to greater safety, autonomy and quality of life in different everyday situations.Main benefits: Discreet and voluntary visual identification; Greater understanding in queues, airports, transportation and events; More empathetic assistance in hospitals and healthcare services; Support in situations involving reduced mobility or motor crises; Strengthening inclusion and the rights of people with Parkinson’s.More than an accessory, the Red Tulip Lanyard represents dignity, support and social recognition.
The initiative has already been gaining institutional recognition in several Brazilian cities.
On September 26, 2023, Municipal Law No. 5,761/2023 was enacted in the city of Agudos – SP, officially recognizing the Red Tulip Lanyard as an identification instrument for people with Parkinson’s.
Since then, similar municipal laws have been approved in different regions of the country, strengthening public policies for inclusion, accessibility and awareness regarding Parkinson’s Disease.
In addition, federal legislative proposals have already been presented in the National Congress to expand the official recognition of the Red Tulip Lanyard throughout Brazil.
